Crabtree Extention

I have added this set of photo after the 2009 Crabtree extent ion to the trail here at Penny Road. This is the newer part of the trail just past Penney Road and these photos were taken right after the extensions to this trail system were completed.

Crabtree Extention

This part of the trail is really quite nice although it is only about a 1 and 1/2 mile extent ion to the trail. This part of the trail was added at the same time that the trail was extended to go all the way around Paul Douglas forest preserve (east of this part of the trail) which is now a loop of a little over 7 miles. All in all you do a pretty long ride on this trail system now.

Crabtree Extention

Back when I took this photo the grass had not yet come in on this part of the trail. I have ridden this trail at lease a few times since these photos were taken and it looks much nicer with the grass now.

Crabtree Extention

The trail is mostly open in this section with a few bridges (like the one ahead) and small trees in the background. There is also a small lake (or pond) in this area, just ahead and off to the right.

Here's the small pond that is visible from trail.

Crabtree Extention

This is a very straight section just before Palatine Road. It doesn't look all that scenic in this photo (sorry my photo quality was not as good back when I took these) but as I mentioned it is still a nice ride in this area.

And here's the new trail head (or trail tail in this case) at Palatine Road. There is a small parking are on the right here if you want to start your ride, on this trail system, here and go east to the Paul Douglas part of the trail.

Crabtree Extention

As you can see it's called "Old Stover Trail head"

...and is directly across from Crabtree Nature Center on Palatine Road. I have been to this nature center before (by car) and it is a nice place to visit and browse around but...

Crabtree Extention

As I was going to tour the nature center on my bike, I came across this sign which includes NO BIKES! I hate when places get so carried away with rules!!! ("sign, sign everywhere a sign...")

I hope you've enjoyed the photo tour of the Algonquin Road bike trail!

The photo tour below is the new Paul Douglas Loop from early spring of 2009. The trail had just been completed but the grass on the shoulders of the trail had not come in yet (it looks greener and nicer now).
