This is the old mile #1 marker. With the new Paul Douglas loop, the mile markers start at the the Grassy Ridge park entrance (off of Central) and go in a counter-clockwise loop back to the park. If you ride just the loop around Paul Douglas Forest Preserve it is a little over 7 miles.

Here's another nice little opening into a nicer part of the trail that is further away from Algonquin Road. This is where the trail actually pulls away from the road for a little while (and actually the beginning of the nicest part of the trail IMO) if you take the loop around Paul Douglas.

This photo is just a little past the curve in the photo above. There is a small section of woods on the right (between the trail and Algonquin Road) and the rest of Paul Douglas forest preserve on the left. I don't have a photo of the intersection (at Algonquin and Freeman) where the branch to the left goes south along Freeman (and around Paul Douglas) and to the right goes west along Algonquin (which is the way I took on this ride). I plan on updating these photo pages soon but for now this part of the trail still looks the same anyway.

This is a section that goes along a neighborhood just past Huntington/Freeman roads. On this particular ride, I continued west (to the right where the trail forks) on the CrabTree part of the trail instead of taking the loop around Paul Douglas (since these photos were taken before the loop was completed).

This section is also right next to Algonquin Road. This is not really my favorite part of the trail (it's actually a sidewalk that connects the actual trails here) but once you get into the Crabtree part of the trail it gets a little nicer once again.

This part of the trail is just before you get to the large Willow Creek church complex. Algonquin Road is divided here and at least it is not quite as congested (at least most of the time).

The photo tour below is the new Paul Douglas Loop from early spring of 2009. The trail had just been completed but the grass on the shoulders of the trail had not come in yet (it looks greener and nicer now).
